Wingmen Gear Review : Sawyer Insect Repellent
Early season bird hunts, whether they be for waterfowl like teal and geese or doves or upland birds are often plagued by biting insects and let’s not forget spring turkey seasons, uffda! Mosquitos, biting flies, gnats, ticks, chiggers all have one thing in common: nobody likes them. They are annoying at best and given their ability to pass along illnesses like West Nile Virus, Zika, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme Disease it’s in every hunter’s best interest to protect ourselves and our working animals from these nasty little critters.
That’s where Sawyer’s complete line of insect repellents come into play. Sawyer makes a product for virtually any application. Want to treat your clothing or a blind? Sawyer Permethrin Fabric Treatment is easy to apply and lasts a long time, like six weeks long. Bugs chewing up your exposed skin? Sawyer Picaridin Insect Repellents and MAXI DEET products are able to keep those pests at bay.
The Permethrin for Dogs insect repellent repels biting flies and mosquitos and kills ticks, it’s safe for your dog and lasts up to six weeks with a single application. Ike Eastman applied it to his horses and mules this summer because they were suffering from biting flies. With one application the animal’s woes were over and have been since he applied the treatment. Think about being able to apply Permethrin for Dogs in early August and having your dogs be protected through the end of September, that’s not just a nice convenience, it’s peace of mind as well.
As for human use I sprayed my clothing with the Permethrin Fabric Treatment a couple weeks ago in anticipation of our Dove and mountain grouse openers and experienced zero problems with either mosquitos or biting flies. It doesn’t smell once dry and was easy to apply. . . one and done.
Last year at this time Brandon Mason and I were hunting waterfowl and bears in northern Alberta, the mosquitos were insanely bad and had us reaching for bug repellent pretty quickly. The only thing that worked with 100% effectiveness was DEET. When the bugs are severe, MAXI DEET is what I grab. It’s the big gun that I try not to use all the time but when it’s needed there’s nothing more effective. 90% of the time I opt for a Picaridin product like the Sawyer Picaridin Insect Repellent Lotion, it works extremely well and is easier on my skin for extended periods of time and usage.
Needless to say, we’ve been impressed with the entire line of Sawyer Insect Repellent products and love the fact Sawyer not only makes awesomely effective products, they actively work to provide “Clean Water For All” with their humanitarian water projects featuring their revolutionary water filtration systems. When you buy Sawyer products you’re helping support clean water projects across the globe and that’s something we can all get behind.
